Battle of the sexes - a physical and fundraising challenge

The Nagoya City Marathon filled up two weeks before the last date of registration and many of our willing participants were left out of the race, only two participants were able to register in time for the event. It is HOPE's own Lowell Sheppard and his wife Kande, who have challenged themselves to a fundraising and physical Battle of the Sexes. Lowell and Kande have been running for a year and a half and are aiming at finishing the race in under two hours.
They have set a goal of 500,000 yen each of sponsorships for their 20km run and our HOPE friends can align themselves to root for the boys or for the gals.
Help Lowell and Kande have a good run at each other by pledging your sponsorship on our HOPE Global Challenge website and by rooting for them on November the 24th.

「男女対抗募金マラソン」開催のお知らせ

11月24日に行われる名古屋マラソンに、ホープからもランナーを募集しておりましたが、残念ながら、応募締切日２週間前にして定員がいっぱいになってしまいました。希望者の多くの方々に参加を断念していただく形となりましたが、ホープから２名、ホープの責任者であるロウェル・シェパード氏とその奥様キャンディさんが参加します。お２人には「男女対抗募金マラソン」にチャレンジしていただくことになりました。ロウェル氏とキャンディさんは１年半に渡るトレーニングをしてきており、２時間以内のゴールインを目指しています。
お２人は２０キロマラソンを通じて、各自５０万円の募金を目標額にしています。ホープ支援者の皆様には男性と女性に分かれてお２人を応援していただければ、と思っています。

Lace up your running shoes! Run for HOPE in the Nagoya City Marathon

For the first time HOPE will be participating the Nagoya City Marathon to raise funds for its overseas projects. We are looking for 50-100 people from the International Community to Run for HOPE on November 24th in this very popular annual sporting event that sees 16,000 people hit the streets of Nagoya.

You can choose to participate in the half marathon, the 10K or the 4K and set your own fundraising goal (minimum 1000 yen per Kilometer). HOPE will take care of the whole registration process and provide you with all your information in English. In addition to getting an Official Race T-shirt, you will also receive an "I Ran for HOPE" T-shirt and have your name entered into a raffle ( top prizes are flights to Guam and Cairns).

The race is open to all ages! The 4k is ideal for families – you are allowed to walk! While the half-marathon is for the truly serious runner. Remember that all funds raised by you will go directly to HOPE run projects all across the world, ranging from AIDS awareness education, to Microcredit programs, to helping rural communities’ easier access to clean water.

Registration deadline is October 20th, but this event often sells out so book your spot early!

ホープは今年、海外プロジェクトの資金集めのため、初の試みとして、名古屋シティマラソンに参加することを決定致しました。名古屋シティマラソンは毎年1万6千人もの観客が集まる、とても人気の高いスポーツイベントで、今年は11月24日に行われます。私たちホープは、ホープを代表して走るランナーを50～100名募集しています。

Myanmar - four months after the tragic cyclone Nargis

Four months after Cyclone Nargis swept through Myanmar leaving behind great devastation, many survivors are still feeling a great sense of distress about their next rice harvest, which is about 2 to 3 months away. The outcome of this harvest will be a good indicator of the recovery of the impacted population. Thanks to the help of HOPE supporters, like you, we were able to give critically needed help to the affected families in the Bogalay region. Please keep this place and these people in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you!

ミャンマー最新情報－サイクロンの悲劇から4ヶ月たった今

ミャンマーに上陸し、甚大な破壊をもたらしたサイクロン・ナルギスから4ヶ月、生存者たちは2、3ヶ月後に迫ったお米の収穫にいまだ不安を抱えています。今回の収穫結果は、被災地がどこまで復興したかを知る、よい指針となるでしょう。ホープのサポーターの皆様のおかげで、ボガレイ地区の被害者家族への救済支援をすることができました。ご協力ありがとうございました。この地域への支援を皆様のサポートにより、今後も続けていきたいと思います。

2008 HOPE staff retreat

Last Thursday the HOPE staff took a day away from the HOPE office and came together in Seto for a staff retreat at Lowell Sheppard's new home to learn about HOPE's philosophy, projects and long-term plans and also to get to know each other better (some of us share a passion for manga, others a passion for underwater hockey, and others a passion for sport shoes).


The staff shared personal stories of how they came to work at HOPE and how they feel their work helps the world's neglected poor. Elise and Lowell began by outlining the projects HOPE is currently working in Myanmar, India, Cambodia, the Phillipines, Sudan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. Followed by a presentation on HOPE's long-term vision and strategies.

The evening concluded on a relaxed note as the HOPE staff enjoyed a wonderful BBQ on Lowell's deck.

2008年度ホープ・スタッフ研修会

先週木曜日、ホープのスタッフは一日事務所を離れて、瀬戸市にあるロウェル・シェパード宅にて、ホープの理念・プロジェクト・長期的計画などを学ぶ研修会を行いました。研修会は、スタッフたちがお互いのことについて知るよい機会にもなりました。漫画、水中ホッケー、スニーカーなど、それぞれが自分の趣味を熱く語り合う場面も見られました。

スタッフらは「なぜホープで働くに至ったか？」、「自分の働きがどのように世界の貧困を救うことにつながっていくと考えるか？」といったことについて、それぞれに意見を交換しました。また、エリーズさんとロウェルさんは、現在ホープが行っているミャンマー、インド、カンボジア、フィリピン、スーダン、アフガニスタン、スリランカでの活動の概要を説明しました。その後、ホープの長期的展望や概念についてのプレゼンテーションが行われました。

夕方にはテラスでバーベキューが振る舞われ、リラックスした雰囲気の中で、一日の研修会が締めくくられました。

The YMCA and HOPE come together at this year's Daimler & Chrysler Golf Tournament

HOPE International Development Agency in collaboration with the YMCA Challenged Children Project organized a silent auction of golf memorabilia, including, at this year’s Daimler & Chrysler Golf Tournament at the Atsugi Kokusai Country Club in Kanagawa Prefecture. Items included a Tiger Woods signed US Open flag, a Jack Nicklaus signed glove and a signed photo of Karrie Webb.
Half of the funds raised by HOPE and the YMCA through the silent auction and donation boxes will help HOPE International Development Agency run HIV/AIDS educational campaigns, give support to orphaned children and fight the devastating consequences of this disease in Ethiopia.

YMCAとHOPEによる共同サイレントオークションが開催されました

ホープ・インターナショナル開発機構は、YMCA障がい児支援プロジェクトと協力し、神奈川県の厚木国際カントリークラブで行われたダイムラー＆クライスラー・ゴルフトーナメントにて、サイレントオークションを開催しました。タイガー・ウッズのサイン入りUSオープンのフラッグや、ジャック・ニコラスのサイン入りグローブ、カリー・ウェブのサイン入り写真などが出品されました。
ホープとYMCAによるオークションの収益と寄付金の半分は、ホープが行うエチオピアでのHIV/AIDS啓蒙教育キャンペーンや、エイズ孤児や病気と闘う人々への支援活動のために使われます。
